NO soldering, NO glue!
The bopper
under-head is high grade, hardened aluminum. The design of the
head under the cap is an expanding arbor making a very quick and easy
change out of the cap. When you wear out a copper cap; simply
release the set screw, remove the cap and replace it! In just
seconds! It's that easy!
Handles
are coated with a very durable coating that gives grip while also
letting the bopper "float" in your hand.
We've designed the balance of our boppers to feel more like an antler
or moose billet than any other copper bopper we know of on the market.

Warren Copper Boppers have quick change copper caps of the highest
quality available. Our caps are thick walled and extruded to keep
equal thickness and the exact radius of the head underneath. This
way, you always have a perfect fit! Other copper caps are cheaply
made, thin walled and uneven.

A
few people who are used to the weight of the traditional type
boppers with lead filling have asked for our
Warren Boppers
with lead. This was not easy because we wanted to maintain the
long life and integrity of our hardened aircraft aluminum under head
while also responding to customer's needs. We
now have the design that works well! There is considerable
extra machining and process time in the manufacture of these but
they are great! |

| Nearly all traditional copper
boppers on the market are made simply of a copper cap with
lead melted in it, then some sort of handle (often inexpensive
wood) glued on to it. While we also make a traditional,
lead filled bopper if you want it (click
here to page down to it), there are the inherent
problems and flaws with this design. First of all, after very
little use, the cap changes shape every time you strike the
rock. Not good for consistent
knapping! And second, it wears out rather
quickly so then you must either buy another bopper or make
another bopper. With our Warren Copper Boppers,
you never have this problem! You can change the cap out
in a few seconds and you are good to go immediately! |

The Set of Three |
A typical knapper's kit will include three
sizes of copper boppers. Basically, as you begin working
your biface into a preform, you will start with the largest
tool. This is because you need to make large, thinning
flakes to reduce the thickness of the biface. As you
work your way toward the finished piece, you will step by step
reduce the size tool you are using.

Okay, so you know what size boppers you want, now there are
some other choices! In addition to our most popular
standard Warren Bopper, we make a forward weighted Warren
Bopper with lead. The standard bopper is balanced to be
more like an antler baton in your hand. This is very
good and especially good if you want to eventually be able to
switch to antler tools in the future. However, some
folks are used to the forward weight and prefer it.
Therefore, we make the weighted Warren Bopper also.
Next, you can choose handle length. We suggest the
standard length tool is best and certainly the most popular.
However, all our tool designs are customer driven and there
have been a number of folks who ask for long handled tools.
We now make these tools with a 7" handle in both weighted and
standard heads. |
Explanation of cap size
nomenclature. Boppers use copper plumbing caps that have been
reshaped into a dome. The caps are classed by the size
of the inner diameter of the tubing that fits into them.
Therefore, a 1-1/4" cap actually measures 1-3/8" inner
diameter. The outside dimension can vary because of wall
thickness. We use NIBCO brand caps because they have a
very consistent thick wall. Click here to see our

This 8" long tool is made of SOLID tough grade aluminum with a 2" (thick walled)
NIBCO copper cap. You can change this cap out in a matter of seconds
just like all our Warren Copper Boppers! Plus our design makes
copper caps last much longer which saves you money. This spalling
tool is designed to handle and balance like a Jim Spears moose billet
and it has Jim's approval.
The stone pictured here is raw Willow Creek Burlington. Even
though I am not really a flint knapper
(more of a flint piddler!) I was able to remove this large, thin spall

Traditional Copper Boppers
We make a very high quality traditional type bopper. We use thick
walled copper caps that are precision lead filled (measured for
consistency). While others make these with a piece of wood
glued on, our have handles that are COPPERSurability, and solid bonding. Also, we LEATHER wrap the
handle to give you an excellent feel in your hand - and for excellent
SOUND! Heads are hand hammered with a special German style chasing
hammer giving our boppers a unique dimpling that improves bite. We
believe this is the highest quality, lead filled bopper you can find.

Additional or replacement
Copper Caps
A word about copper caps. We
have researched which caps are the best for use, wear, and uniformity
from one cap to the next. This is important to you because you want the exact same response from
your tool hit after hit. USA NIBCO caps seem to take the prize.
They are very consistent in size, length, and wall thickness. Wall
thickness is important in regard to
how long they last. We also have found that the metallurgical
hardness of the caps from NIBCO is very consistent, too. And while
NIBCO caps cost us more to provide with our tools, we think it is worth
it after trying to use some thin cheapies from China with rough edges!
